Future Materials Lab is awarded a new project by Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) on 3D printing High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) with improved mechanical properties. The project will be a collaboration between our group and CCAM.

Future Materials Lab is awarded a new project by ONR on engineering the microstructure of 3D printed alloys to tailor their mechanical properties. The research will be focused on designing the material at the microstructural level, 3D printing of the designed microstructure with different alloys, and characterizing the fabricated materials at different scales.

In collaboration with MInDS lab and MedShape company, we will investigate Ultrasound-Responsive Polymeric Systems. Shape memory polymers are an emerging class of smart materials that have the ability to return from a deformed temporary shape to their original permanent shape when subjected to an external stimulus such as heat, light, and a magnetic field. In this new project, we will investigate high-intensity focused ultrasound as a novel and promising stimulus with unique capabilities to actuate the controlled shape recovery of shape memory polymers.

This year the DOE: Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy (EERE) will fund 55 projects to support innovative advanced manufacturing research and development. The third-largest project funded by DOE will receive ~ $11 M, and it will be awarded to a consortium of ~25 universities, companies, and national labs. Our lab is a part of the group. The final goal of the project is "significantly increasing the energy efficiency and product quality to position the U.S. for global leadership in advanced manufacturing".
